The most common question people ask is “How can I make money with my blog?” The funny thing is that it’s actually really easy to do yet most people never make a dime. This article breaks down the 3 main reasons why your blog isn’t making money.
1. You don’t want it as much as you think
If you really wanted to make money from your blog you would already be doing it, right? You wouldn’t start a blog, post 5 things and then give up.
Blogging takes dedication and time and most people aren’t willing to work on a blog consistently. Period.
If you want to make money with your blog the first thing you need to do is make blogging a part of your life. At the time of writing I still have a 9-5 job, so I wake up at 5am to make time for blogging. I go to the coffee shop and start writing at 7am until I have to go to work.
Tip: Be consistent with blogging
2. Your content sucks
Everything you write is terrible. Or is it? Our inner voices can be very critical of our work and as a result our confidence plummets. Maybe you spent a lot of time writing a post and then you re-read it and think it’s terrible. Maybe it is, but it’s probably not!
Blogs provide content for free (unless you charge for premium content) so most people are forgiving if there’s a typo or two. Even better for you: most people just skim blog posts so they probably don’t even notice your mistakes.
If you don’t think you’re a great writer then keep at it! The only way we get better at something is to do it over and over. You can always go back and polish your blog posts later.
Tip: Don’t be so hard on yourself
3. Nobody is reading your blog
Have you been posting consistently, but you only have a couple of daily page views when you open Google Analytics? Are those page views you?
Your blog’s not broken and neither is your content; that’s just how the Internet works. You’re a very small fish in a very very large pond.
I’m a software engineer and I work for companies that have raised tens of millions of dollars (or more). These companies have teams of people dedicated to SEO so you probably won’t outrank them. They also have teams dedicated to social media, content creation, marketing, and sales. Oh, and they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars monthly on ads.
The playing field isn’t level so don’t try to compete on it. Instead you need to work an angle these companies cannot: you are not a multimillion dollar corporation.
For every hour you spend writing a blog post, spend 10 promoting it and building your personal brand:
- post on your social networks
- ask friends to share
- e-mail other bloggers
- go to meetups and promote yourself
- teach a class about your blog’s topic
You need to meet a ton of people and bring them as much value as you can. If you do this, then they will be your biggest fans and promote your material on your behalf.
Tip: Spend more time promoting than writing
How to Make Money With Your Blog
Everything in this article is common sense, yet most people don’t do these things. In the same vein, we all know we should exercise and eat right, but most do not.
Get your head in the game and determine if you really want to dedicate your time to blogging. You only get one life so you’d might as well spend it doing something you love.
If you want to make money with your blog, the first things you need to do are:

- be kinder to yourself
- spend more time promoting than writing
